Why Chocolate Can Chase Away The Blues!

Many people, especially us women, love to have chocolate and sometimes say they feel it gives them a bit of a feel-good mood.  The latest research now demonstrates that natural ingredients in chocolate, berries and teas are chemically similar to many prescription drugs used today for mood stabilizing.

“Molecules in chocolate, a variety of berries and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids have shown positive effects on mood. In turn, our studies show that some commonly used flavor components are structurally similar to valproic acid,” said Karina Martinez-Mayorga, Ph.D., who is the leader of a research team that has been studying the effects of natural ingredients on mood.

Valproic acid is used to manage mood swings in people with bipolar disorder. It is also prescribed to control seizures and migraines.

These finding by Martinez-Mayorga were presented the American Chemical Society meeting in Philadelphia, and she noted that her research is preliminary.  She also cautions that patients should never substitute food for prescription medicine.  We agree here strongly as we have seen people have devastating effects if they try to substitute their current medications.  However, in the quest for a healthy mind, body and life, chocolate, berries, tea, and omega-3-rich foods are a smart move to add to anyone’s lifestyle habits.

Gotta go now and get some chocolate!
